Why vegetable dye?

22 Jan

As a company that is conscious of  the environment our bags are vegetable dyed…but why? An American made Texas based company shed some light onto this popular question.

Let’s talk green cleaning

15 Jan

Image

Spring cleaning anyone?? Maybe not just yet, but why not go green with your cleaning products this year? Some cleaning ingredients can cause skin and eye irritation, chemical burns, and possibly long term effects like cancer.

What to avoid: Any products marked “Danger” or “Poison” on the label. Products that list the active ingredient as chlorine or ammonia which have the potential to cause skin and respiratory irritation. Also, detergents containing phosphates are harmful to aquatic life.

There aren’t enough regulations that force companies to list all ingredients in household cleaners so your safest option is to make your own.

DIY GLASS CLEANER

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup white or cider vinegar
  • 1/4 rubbing alcohol
  • 1-2 drops of orange or lavender essential oil

DIY ALL PURPOSE CLEANER

  • 4 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 quart warm water

DIY BATHTUB/SINK CLEANER

  • 1 grapefruit
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt
  • HOW TO: Cut grapefruit in half and sprinkle with salt. Scrub grapefruit all over surface squeezing the juice out from time to time. Rinse and you’re done!

If you do purchase cleaning products from a store, be conscious of the environment and remember that plant-based ingredients are the best alternative to petroleum-based cleaners. Happy cleaning.

7 Tips for a Greener Holiday Season

20 Dec

Image

The holiday season is always a little nutty. Even though it’s coming to a close we have some tips for a greener holiday.

1. Send holiday cards electronically. If you like to keep it traditional, use recycled paper or send cards that use soy ink.

2.Use LED lights to decorate from now on. They’re 90% more efficient than traditional lights.

3. Carpool to holiday parties. The more the merrier, right?

4. Buy a real Christmas tree. Artificial trees are made with petroleum-based materials and sometimes shipped thousands of miles.

5. At the end of the holiday season, turn the tree into mulch through local city-sponsored programs.

6. Re-use gift bags or wrap gifts in recycled materials like comic books, old posters, or used calendars. It’s a great way to be creative and helpful for the environment.

7. Use soy or beeswax candles for holiday lighting ceremonies. These candles are made from renewable resources and last twice as long as traditional parrafin ones.

Happy Holidays!
